The imagery, the language, and the assumptions often reflected a narrow vision of who “belongs” in the conversation—wealthy, privileged, and far removed from the lived experiences of many families.

That message—subtle or explicit—has had consequences. It has left many women of color feeling unseen, excluded, or uncertain about whether estate planning is relevant to their lives.

Why This Work Is Personal

My name is Elsa W. Smith, and I am a Maryland estate planning and probate attorney. My work and educational outreach intentionally center women of color because representation is not symbolic—it is practical. When people see themselves reflected in professional guidance, they are more likely to engage, ask questions, and take action.

Estate planning touches the most personal aspects of life: family, care, responsibility, and legacy. Those conversations deserve cultural awareness, respect, and understanding. My practice is grounded in a simple but powerful mission: to empower women through estate planning.
