Estate Planning Maintenance Program

Experienced Annapolis Estate Planning Lawyer Serving Clients in Anne Arundel, Prince George’s, Howard, Baltimore Counties, and surrounding areas.

Clients rarely return to the lawyer who prepared their documents unless they have a compelling reason to, as is to be expected. Years pass before the clients consult with an attorney once more about their plan, and by that point, it might be too late to make changes that might have been highly desirable due to a change in the client’s circumstances or the circumstances of a family member, a change in the law.

After an attorney drafts an estate plan for your family, it is typical for circumstances to later develop that call for your attorney to review the plan to make sure it still satisfies your needs, goals, and circumstances. In fact, the Law Offices of Elsa W. Smith LLC advises clients to have one of our estate planning attorneys review their wills at least annually especially if there are significant life changes. We created the Estate Planning Maintenance Program for a number of reasons, including this.

Do You Have an Estate Plan That Is Up to Date?

In what we can all agree is an uncertain world, an estate plan is meant to give you and your family some level of certainty. The goal of an estate plan is to create legal documents that will protect your interests no matter what the future may bring. However, it is common—and almost expected—that the circumstances of your life will change over time.

Changes to your estate plan may be necessary as a result of significant life events. After any of the following life events, for instance, you should always have a lawyer review your estate plan:

  • Bringing a child into the home (birth or adoption);
  • Divorce or remarriage;
  • Changes in your health;
  • Changes in your financial situation;
  • Changes in business ownership;
  • Death of a beneficiary; or
  • Changes to your distribution plan, for example, if you want to add charitable giving.

Additionally, it’s a good idea to review your estate plan once a year to make sure it remains current with any legal changes. Maintaining your estate plan will allow you to relax knowing that you and your family have a solid plan in place for whatever the future may bring.

We developed The Estate Planning Maintenance Program because we want to make it as simple as possible for you to make sure that your estate plan is current.

To ensure that our current clients’ estate plans continue to benefit them as effectively as they did when they were first created, we developed the Estate Planning Maintenance Program.
